Further Development, Updating and Assessment of the SCS-SA Model for Design Flood Estimation in South Africa Using a Continuous Simulation Approach

I was involved with this project as part of the research for my Master of Science degree, which involved working on the Rainfall Temporal Disaggregation aspect. The project was conducted through the Centre for Water Resources Research and supported by the Water Research Commission (WRC), Royal Academy of Engineering as part of the National Flood Studies Programme (NFSP), and the South African National Committee on Large Dams (SANCOLD).
Msunduzi Pollution Monitoring, Maintenance and Community Education Project
I was involved with this project through my work with the Duzi Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT). It was contracted by the Pietermaritzburg Municipality to assess the viability for utilization of new technologies for reporting and long-term monitoring of Sewer Infrastructure issues, water quality, pollution and potential environmental impacts of industry. My work consisted of analysis of the years of historical data collected since the project’s inception and formulating indicative summary reports and insights. These were then incorporated into a live data dashboard for easier visualization of trends and statistics.
Evaluating the Influence of the Resistance Parameter KB-1on Satellite-Derived Evapotranspiration Estimates
This research was conducted as a requirement for my Honours degree. The overall aim of the study was to improve understanding of how the kB-1 aerodynamic resistance parameter can influence the accuracy of terrestrial flux and Evapotranspiration estimates.
The Surface Energy Balance System (SEBS) model was utilized to derive data from Satellite Imagery. The imagery used was obtained from the NASA Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive & Distribution System (LAADS) Distributed Active Archive Centre (DAAC). The MODIS Terra data products with Level 1-B Calibrated Radiances (MODO21KM) and Geolocation (MODO3) imagery were used for each day in the study period.
